Diagnosing a Sick Tree:
When confronted with a sick tree, my job is first to determine why it is sick (if possible), and then devise a treatment plan that will increase the chances of the tree's survival. The lists of things I do to gain these insights include, but are not limited to:
- Talking to the owner of the tree
- Observing other plants in the area
- Visually checking the tree for insects Checkling the frequency of the tree's watering system
- Visually checking the trees leaves for signs of damage or deficiencies
- Visually checking for fungal infection
- Inquiring about any digging to the root system
- Checking for signs of physical damage
To draw any kind of conclusion from the information gathered from the questions above, it is necessary to have a knowledge of the inner-workings of plant biology and to have a working overview of how a tree works as a complete system.
Furthermore, one needs to be well-versed in the peculiarities of the area and climate. This is especially true here in the Valley of the Sun, where the extreme heat of summer is a real challenge to many tree species.
On top of all this, there are soil characteristics, fungal and bacterial diseases, insects and the human element to consider.
I’ve been diagnosing and treating sick trees for over 45 years, and while I certainly don’t know everything I can usually help.
